Hello, I am considering purchasing one of the programs and honestly I just don't know which one to choose. I have been reading here quite a bit and also read the comparisons but I am still stumped. I haven't done cross stitch for the past 10 years and I was only a novice player. I am thinking about all of the patterns I can create and getting excited but I wonder if someone would be so kind as to point out some obvious differences between the two in plain English! I also have Vista and I am not a computer whiz. I also wanted to know if I did purchase the PCStitch, am I able to upgrade to Pro at a price other than $79.00??

I can't answer the price question. However, Pro and Standard are the same basic program. When you download for evaluation, you specify which version you are testing. It's "locked" into place when you purchase. If in doubt, I would generally recommend the Pro because of the extra features it has. The comparison chart on the main site here (http://www.pcstitch.com/PCSStandard/PvsS.aspx ) show all the extra features.
I have used both and Pro is definitely a superset of Standard.
For an answer to the price question, though, you need to use the Contact Us point and ask.
As for a general difference between the two:
Pro will allow you to open and manipulate between multiple designs at once in the same window. Standard requires totally separate "copies" of the program and it's not always possible to share pieces between them.
Although you can use special features like customs stitches, borders and so forth with Standard, you cannot CREATE new ones yourself without Pro.
Standard does not support the highlight feature that that is a really nice one. With it, you can easily see all stitches of a given color in relationship to the whole pattern but easily identifiable.
There are many other features that are only available from Pro such as sorting the colors the way you want rather than a pre-canned form, auto-backstitch, Using different symbols by stitch type and even multiple color symbols (such as is used by Dimensions patterns). Using logos in print and pattern notes.
For me, one of the best features of Pro is the ability to SAVE the pattern in Version 7 format. This allows you to share YOUR pattern with others who may have not updated as well as the file is FAR smaller than the 9 format.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, your information does help. I am leaning toward Pro as well because there would be more features offered. Hopefully I will understand the program. I will decide which way to go next week.

Hi Diane,
Well I goofed! The PGA is golf. I meant the PMA Convention. It's a trade show with many photo/computer programs, scrap booking companies etc. I found the list of exhibitors and PCStitch was not on the list. I guess I will find out when I am there!
