I generally print off the pattern and then mark off stitches as they are completed with a highlighter pen. is there a way of toing the equivalent on the computer pattern?

There are two possible ways.

The most common is to simply print the pattern and mark it off as usual.

The other way is to use a COPY (not the original) pattern file and remove the areas you have completed or change them in some way.

This software is more designed to create patterns, not use the software for the actual project.
