When importing photos large areas that are different shades of green come in as black. I've tried using some of the tips from the Forum, such as increasing the stitches and colours to maximum, but area still comes in as black. I read the comment that computers don't see colours the way we do. Strange that my computer differentiates between these colours in Photoshop but not in PCStitch.
Have you tried the recommended trick of shrinking the photo so that one pixel equals one stitch. It maybe the problem of trying to merge several pixels into a single stitch causing a problem.
Also, you can change colors later. During the "tweaking phase", it's extremely common to change the colors of what you are given during the import to something that seems to fit better.
Changing the pixels didn't help with the large black area in the foreground. I had to go back to Photoshop and select this area and change the lighting, plus increase the individual colour saturation then import again.
