For years now, users have wanted to save their patterns as PDF files. The only way to do it is with a PDF generator as a logical printer.

Also, for years now, I have recommended a product called PrimoPDF as this logical printer. In all honesty, I can no longer recommend this product. It has nothing to do with the merits of the program itself but the INSTALL of the product.

I know that many installs now have all sorts of products offered along with the main product and can accept or decline them. Products such as Chrome or McAfee are often the products offered in these installs.

What PrimpPDF does is far different. Besides the ultra fine print and crowded messages obscuring the names of the products, I found some products installed that were not even in the accept/decline list. To make matters worse, as I was trying to uninstall products, it was using the uninstall to install more stuff. I ended up uninstalling/installing some products 3 or 4 times before I got everything out! It was a royal mess.

Save yourself the trouble -- use something else. Don't try to install PrimoPDF.

I have noticed that the Foxit Reader (clone of Adobe Reader) has a similar logical printer. A single test shows it does seem to work but I need further tests to be sure it's stable and works well enough in general.

I'll post my results on Foxit Reader PDF Creator.

Thank you for the warning Diane.
I have been using PrimoPDF for several years now. It has been ok but have found it getting increasingly slow and unstable to use - is that something else you have found as an issue? Or is it just my ageing laptop???
I am also still looking for a PDF printer which I can also use as a PDF merger (currently using a good free one - PDF Merge) rather than use the two separate pieces of software - has anyone any suggestions please?

Daisy,

I don't know about increasing slowness but I have found that PrimoPDF has never been blazing fast. I never even thought about it until I made the tests with the PDF creator that is part of the Foxit Reader.

For merging/splitting and so forth with PDFs, I use PDF Core. I had another one before and liked it pretty well but when I got this Desktop PC a few years ago, I made the decision that java wasn't safe and never put it on. Down with my splitter! PDF Core doesn't user java. They can't spell but it works OK. Every time split a PDF, it creates a folder names "splited". That single "t" drives me nuts!

To get everything in one product may not be possible, especially when you don't directly access the product as a logical printer, you just select it from the drop-down menu of available printers! Foxit has an additional advantage that it is in the context menu. If you wish to make a PDF of a file, you may be able to simply right-click on the file name in Window Explorer (File Explorer in 8 and 8.1) and select to create the PDF using Foxit.

Good Luck,

Diane

Hi Diane - thank you for that.
Since commenting, my PrimoPDF has stopped working completely. You convert the chart as normal, but when you look where the file should be, there's nothing. GRRR!
I'm with you 100% on the speeling thing !!!! My Dad always used to threaten to go round the shops with a red pen, correcting all the spelling and punctuation errors. One he really hated was potatoe's !

As I said in your other post. I never had any trouble with PrimoPDF either. It was when I tried to install it on a second machine that I saw how much they had changed and I got mad. As a friend said -- it's not nice to make little dragon mad!

I use doPDF when I want to print to a .PDF format. When I want to merge .PDF files I use a program called PDFreDirect. When using PDFreDirect it will let you arrange your files in the order you want them to appear in their new merged result.

In my older copy of PC Stitch I have to print the color key plus the chart/pattern itself in two steps. Then I use the PDFreDirect program to unify those two into a single .PDF document. I haven't used it in a while but it might support batch processing.
