Do I need to activate any key in order to just plain backstitch ?
I don't understand the Backstitching directions. Thanks.

To backstitch, just click on the stitch icon at the top. It's shown with a horizontal line. Check the helps for how to do a single stitch (mark both ends) or to string a series of backstitches together.
