The keys to the best import of a photo to a cross stitch pattern seem to be 4:
1) Simple photos work better than complex ones. Especially make sure the background is simple.
2) Make your image tiny. Decide what size design you want to stitch and what size stitch. For example, if you want to make an 8 X 10 using 14 count, then make your image as close as possible to 112 X 140 pixels as you can while keeping the original aspect ratio of the image. It looks tiny but having 1 pixel to 1 stitch gives the best designs.
3) Keep the number of colors fairly small. That reduces "confetti" stitches and makes it blend better.
4) Be prepared to "tweak" your imported design. The software sees the image differently than human eyes and the result can look strange in areas. There will also be confetti stitches no matter how much you try to avoid them. Adjusting the image (with frequent overall views of the design) is necessary to give you just what you want.
Remember - this is as much an art on your part as it is "science" of the software. Take your time. Relax.
