This is a common situation. Every time the software has upgraded (from 5 to 6 to 7 to Pro), the previous versions do not load the newer versions software.
In this case, there have been a great many new things that are saved. More information about the pattern including company and copyright and even an optional logo are saved. Also, new features such as petite stitches and varying number of strands for each color must be saved. The latest zoom level is now saved as well as a thumbnail image of the design.
This all means a much larger file that has items that the earlier versions cannot handle. Therefore, earlier versions do not accept the format.
However, if you are not using some of the advanced features but are using it for the advanced environement (as I usually do), you can export your pattern into standard (version 7) format that can be loaded by PCStitch Version 7. That does help in portability.
