There is no reason that any pattern cannot have flosses from multiple palettes. Just select the palette and color you want for each color stitch you want.
Also, although the colors are much more limited for the satin versus stranded cotton palettes, the color numbers (at least for DMC) are basically the same. For example, the bright yellow of stranded cotton DMC 307 is DMC s307 for satin.
Even if you decide to use stranded cotton in your pattern, you can choose to use the satin version (if it matches) when you actually stitch. It's all your choice.
