The problem you are seeing is not really a problem. It's just simply that the computer sees the image differently than you do. You see sharp edges and only one color. If you zoom in enough to really see it, you will see it's not that way.
The best way to minimize this effect is to make the image TINY! Make it the same dimensions in pixels as your desired pattern will be in stitches. That is - if you are making an 8 x 10 image in 14 count, then you must make the image as close as possible to 112 X 140 pixels.
Even then, there will be a lot of tweaking to make the pattern you want.
In addition, you cannot make the kind of pattern you describe. Importing an image into PCStitch will ONLY give you full cross stitches. There is no way to make it give you backstitches! Those have to be done manually -- major tweaking!
