I have imported a picture to make a pattern for the first time, when I checked the colors I noticed that some the same symbols were used for different colors. Is there a solution for this?

It's a well known issue that some of the symbols in the PCStitch fonts are duplicated. All you can do (and it's easy to do) is change the color of one of the 2 colors that happen to share a single symbol.

I had read in the help section that if you changed a symbol it could change the color. I was trying to find out if any one had this problem and if it changed the color or not

The symbols and the colors are separate. All you need to do is click on a color in the palette panel (usually below the pattern). That selects that color and it's symbol. If you then open the symbol panel (to the left), it will show that symbol highlighted (usually a dark blue). If you click on any symbol that is not marked with a lighter blue (actually a pattern of blue/white), that symbol becomes highlighted and the symbol for the color you selected changed.

It's a very common procedure. It's very very common that the symbols that are automatically selected for colors in an import of picture-pattern process are NOT what the user wants. Change them as often as you want.
