One of the requests that we got for the new version of PCStitch is a better way to print half stitches on the printed chart. I agree that the way it works now is not great, but how do you think half stitches should be printed?

Thanks.

Maybe the half-stitches could be defined a different symbol. 2 symbols for the same color. The software would automatically mark the "correct" symbol on the chart when a half-stitch is requested and print that way.

The legend would list the 2 symbols and have some mark (maybe a 1/2) to note half stitches.

The one question I have is that has no way of saying which direction the half stitches are going.

Any ideas on that?

Right now, the half stitches print as a symbol in the grid square with a diagonal line that goes through the square, and the diagonal line shows the direction of the half stitch.

The current software has the ability to define a different symbol for the half stitches, and they are called out separately on the color key. What should we do differently?

The problem is the diagonal slash through the symbol obscures the symbol. Maybe you can just slightly reduce the size of the symbol, enclose it in a "box" with points at opposite corners to mark the direction. That way the box (with thin lines) and the "points" would show the half-stitch but the symbol would still be readable.

How about printing the diagonal line and then a smaller symbol in the empty upper corner like this:

That might work. the one possible problem is the symbol may be too small to be easily read. It depends on how much smaller than the "normal" symbol it has to be.
