Posted - 10/23/2009 : 09:17:31 Have you noticed that there is a new version of Standard out there? It's PCStitch 9 Standard. It looks much more like Pro and has some new features.
I noticed a small problem with Standard and I wonder if anybody else has seen this or been able to get this work.
Under the Options (bottom of Tools menu) and the Default Display Screen there's an option to display rulers and if so (what unit of measurement). The default is Yes and Inches. I tried to change that "Inches" to 'Stitches" and it's ignored. I tried to turn the rulers OFF and they won't go.
Has anybody gotten this setting to change from the default? It works in Pro (that got an update, too) but not in Standard.

Posted - 10/30/2009 : 12:27:55 Hello Diane! If you import a photo you can choose how many colors you would like to use, the brightness, contrast and so on. One of this options is to scan the colored photo as a black and white one. Then only the shades of gray are used for adjustment. Because there are only round about 20 grays avaiable in your floss list, the adjustment is a lot of easier to do than with the full color range. But there are some other points because I don't like the pro version and the new standard. If you want to reduce the colors and would like to get a preview you have to scroll. In version 7 you just click on "color reduce" and you not only see how many colors you've got. The preview is in the right size that you can see if it's good or not. I just would like to have everything at first sight. I don't want to click here and there and look into the color list and decide which one I should delete/merge. It's a question of usability for me. I can work with version 7 very good and will use it further on. Windows 7 has to wait, too.

You can "detach" the bottom floss palette and make it bigger. You can also change the size of the symbols within it (smaller blocks means more colors in the same area). I don't leave the available colors pinned. I just pin it (and the symbols) long enough to assign my colors for the specific design and then just un-pin it. You can actually delete it from view (you can get it back by selecting it from the menus).
I don't know what you mean about the gray scale.
Remember, I don't normally use Standard. I normally use Pro and since the two now share the same "code base", they are much the same from the user point of view (except for the multi-pattern and some other options).
I'm not trying to make you accept this new version. There are many products out there and how they work for each person if a very personal decision. I don't know how long version 7 will still be supported but as long as it works for you, I don't see a problem. I know some people still use 6 or even 5 although neither version is supported any longer.

Posted - 10/30/2009 : 09:14:17 Hello Diane! I've given it a second chance only to decide the same. This program is not made for me by all means! I'm missing the grey scale in the design area e. g. Sometimes it's easier to use all the greys instead of the other colors for adjusting. Because of the floss palette. It's not important for me to have got a push pin or sth. like that. I really don't need it. What I need is, if I've scanned a photo, to get an overview of all the used colors at first sight. You know, I'm doing designs with more than one or two colors. Sometimes I'm scanning the photos with 200. To adjust them I need the full color table and not only one row at the bottom. Even in the tool section you can only see the first two numbers in the select box. But I need all three to decide to what number I would like to reduce the colors. I've made my decision. I won't buy it. For me it would be wasted money.

You can "hide" that floss palette and any others that show all the time by "unpinning" it. Look in the upper right corner of any panel. There are two symbols, an "X" and a "push pin". If you click on the pin it toggles between "pinned" and "unpinned". That allows you to keep it up (as I do with the bottom panel) or hide when your mouse moves off of it. You need to click to bring it up but it goes away when your mouse goes away.
It really is convenient to use. I select all my colors and then go back and set symbols for them. It does assign default symbols automatically which eliminates an old 7 problem of an "undefined" symbol for a color.
You can also re-size the window to whatever you want. One nice feature of 9 that we didn't have with 7 is each pattern remembers the last "zoom" setting! That's convenient.
I suggest you give it a chance. For those who have not used Pro, it is a bit different. However, it is more flexible and actually easier to use than the old 7. For those who use pro, it is missing some features (such as the ability to have multiple patterns open at once in a single window) but the basic idea is the same even if some of the panels have moved. Pro has them on left and right sides of the window whereas Standard only has the panels on the right.

Posted - 10/30/2009 : 05:11:54 Hello everyone! I've just installed the new version and deleted it after half an hour. This version is a real nightmare for me! I'm not able to get an overview over the floss palette. I can't even see the numbers of colors I'm using, if I go to palette tools. It only shows the first two numbers and not all three. The design area is too small for me. In version 7 it's a lot of better. I won't buy this version.

Posted - 10/25/2009 : 15:17:34 Once I click, and enter a number, it stays there regardless of where I move the mouse. However, Once you tab or anything to actually do any with it, you have to reset it back within the box. I tried tabbing but tabbing to the select option didn't take with an enter - just a mouse click.
This thing is very oriented to the mouse rather than the keyboard.

Posted - 10/25/2009 : 14:27:34 THanks. As long as I click and don't move the cursor inside another panel it's fine. Wierd but I can live with it lol. |

Posted - 10/25/2009 : 08:18:55 Amber, make sure you click the mouse in the find box to place the text cursor there. It won't stay otherwise. It worked for me.
