I have just moved to a new computer with Vista preloaded (unfortunately :-( ). Having a LOT of problems with it, if you have the option to stay with XP, I certainly encourage it. Anyway...

I recall that an older version of Calendar Creator that was designed for maybe Windows 95 caused problems if you attempted to install it on XP, so I am wondering if anyone has any experience with installing PCStitch 4.0 on XP or Vista and whether it is safe to attempt to install it or not?

Thanks!

I knew about that. I found it on a game when I first upgraded. I tend to forget about it. According to Kris Pixton, it's Microsoft's way to force developers to use another method.

PS - Sorry I didn't think to include this a moment ago, but I do realize that the Help files will not work on Vista unless you do a download from Microsoft, and anyone else installing to Vista should be aware of this.

FYI to anyone who faces this situation in the future...

I did go ahead and install 4.0 on my XP laptop just as a test (after setting a system restore point and holding my breath), and opened it and poked around inside a bit and so far, no problems!

If I do encounter any problems, I will be sure to post that here so that no one in the future has to repeat my mistake!

I updated desktop's processor three years ago and back then it was fast (IIRC it's 1.8 GB), nowadays it's the norm.)

Yes - I actually learned programming on an IBM punch card system with 8k of RAM (you read that correctly) and a 5 MB hard drive - I was present the day they upgraded the system to 16k and our instructor, who was a programmer for the college, danced in the hall! It is truly amazing...

That is really the reason I very rarely upgrade software. I have had a few bad experiences where things that worked previously stopped working when I did. Plus the issue of requiring more resources, etc.

I think my sister-in-law has an XP laptop she is not using, I am going to ask if I can install it on there and see if it "breaks" anything.

A major software change usually changes the first number (4 in your case). Minor changes change after that. As in the case of Pro, the current version is 8.03.08. That means that it was a major change from 7 to 8. Moderate changes caused the second number to go from .00 to .03 and minor changes within .03 brought it up to .08.

That means that your version 4 has had major changes to go to 5, 6, 7 and 8. At this time only 7 (Standard) and 8 (Pro) is actively supported.

That does not mean that there are major problems with 4. In many cases, the "major changes" are new features and enhancements. What it does mean is if you do find a problem with 4, you are not likely to have it repaired. The software is too old. Only the actively supported software will normally receive updates.

I generally refer to software such as yours that is no longer supported an orphan. It may work but it won't be updated.

I do not know what changes were made along the way from 4 to 7. Version 7 was the actively supported version when I first acquired the software myself.

Another point to keep in mind is free and purchased patterns in PCStitch format. Each version of PCStitch will accept that levels patterns and anything prior to it. For you, that means versions 1 - 4. If you find a pattern, free or otherwise, in a later version (5, 6, 7 or 8), you will not be able to view it from your software. You can get a free viewer of a later version for that purpose but I think you'll find that once you start looking at a newer version, you will want to do more with it (full upgrade).

It's all your choice. I would be curious to know if version 4 will even work under Vista. I've seen some very old stuff work and some almost new stuff NOT work. If it does, it may be a case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Thanks for your reply.

Can you tell me what you mean by that's a BIG jump?

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I am not unwilling to upgrade, but just thought I would try 4.0 and see if it would work first.

I have Vista Ultimate pre-installed on my computer (got in in April). I have actually been pleased at the number of programs that do work in Vista but some of them take a few tricks to do that! More than 95% of my older software still works.

Mark has listed that PCStitch 7 (Standard) and PCStitch 8 (Pro) are Vista compatible. Any thing earlier may not work properly. I suggest trying two things. First, try to set the compatibility mode to Win 95. If that does not work, uninstall the program and re-install it but specify a special (custom made) folder OUTSIDE of C:\Program Files. I have seen several cases, especially with very old software, that the security measures in that folder prevents it from working properly under Vista.

If it still will not work, the only thing you can do is upgrade. That's a BIG jump. This is the first time I've seen any thing before version 5. On the bright side, by upgrading, you will be making a great many free designs possible.
