Hi,

I just bought a new PC and want to install my PCStitch 9 Pro but my new PC doesn't have a disc drive. It's a 10.1" laptop/tablet that runs full Windows 8.1. Is there a way for me to download the older PCStitch 9 Pro onto it? I plan on upgrading to version 10 next month, but until then I would like to work on my existing projects. Thank you for your help!

Thanks,
Terrie Mooneyham

Miss Mooneyham,

I looked up the tablet / netbook hybrid you bought. How strange it has only one USB 3.0 port on the detachable keyboard. A single USB 3.0 port easily will handle the power and data requirements of an external USB powered DVD burner. I would suggest using Fry's Electronics to place your order. Their selection of tech gear is superior to all others in my opinion. One thing I forgot to mention is you'll need to keep the computer and the external optical disc drive still, like on a table, while the optical drive is in use.

This is the drive that I bought (Lite-On model which is made by Philips). The chassis feels flimsy compared to beefier external drives that I have used. But the drive performs flawlessly, does not get warm to the touch, and is so quiet you can barely hear it. Here is a review video from youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahVmoCnMmEk

The reviewer does not explain that 8x and 24x are how the speed of the drive relates to real time recording. An 8x drive operates eight times faster than real time recordings (1x). The speed of your computer, the speed of the USB port it is attached to, plus the amount of RAM your computer has are also factors in how quickly your data will be handled by the external DVD burner.

I use an older generation dual core AMD 64-bit Athlon x2 Compaq notebook. It runs at 2 GHz with 4 GBs RAM. The internal Lightscribe DVD burner stopped making DVDs and CDs, but still can be used to write to the label side of LS media. What I found cool was I can burn DVDs from the new external while simultaneously write labels on the internal. Well I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Bruce

Thank you so much, Bruce!! I think that is what I will need to do. You've been a very big help! My new PC is an Asus T100TA Transformer Book that runs Windows 8.1, but only has one 3.0 USB drive and one micro USB drive. Can you suggest one that would work best? I appreciate all of your help!

Thanks,
Terrie

You can also buy an inexpensive external DVD reader or burner to attach via your USB port on your tablet. That will allow you to copy the files directly to your new computer. The newest wave of external optical drives (readers and burners) are so energy efficient that they are powered directly off the USB port(s). Some models like the LiteOn need just one USB port for both power and data use. Other models may require two USB ports to do the same thing.

Terrie,

If you have a copy of what you downloaded for version 9, you can use the USB or flash-drive idea to copy that to your new tablet. Then you can install and activate using the code you received for it (check an old email).

As for any upgrade to 10, you would have to check with Mark. Version 10 has been out for about 3 years now so a discount to upgrade may not be possible anymore.

I forgot, I actually bought version 8 on disc but paid for the upgrade to version 9 by download on the PCStitch site. If I am unable to load it on my new pc, will I have to repurchase the program for the full price? Do you know if I will still get the discount that has been offered to me?

Thanks,
Terrie

If you still have your old PC with a disk drive, you can try copying the entire disk to a folder on the PC and then networking the two machines to copy the folder to the new PC and try to execute the installer there. I doubt you can use email to send it from one to the other. If your new tablet has a USB port you can use a flash drive OR you can directly connect the two machines to download the information.

If your version is not a download but a CD as I described above, it's the only way to get a licensed version of version 9. The CD version doesn't need the unlock code and unless you purchased it via download, you have no unlock code to activate any download you have.

If you do not have access to a second machine and you have it via CD, there's not much you can do right now.
