First - it won't work with an "object" or "motif". You must merge such items into the background. All you have to do is to select the auto-backstitch you wish (single or multi-color) and then click on a stitch where you want the backstitching to start. The current color will then be used. If you need to change the color, change it before you click on a stitch.

If it's a single-color backstitch, it will outline the block of that color that includes the stitch you marked. If it's a multi-color backstitch, it will follow the outline of a contiguous block starting from the selected stitch and back around to itself.

The key is NO OBJECT. I had a bit of trouble testing because my sample happened to be one of the Thousand + objects included with the software now.
