I want to do a picture of our dear cats that have passed on! the problem is the backstitching. I know enough to put it around the eyes
to highlight them. but other than that I'm lost.
2. and what color is right?

Backstitching is not a required item of any design. It is a designer's choice. The purpose is to highlight an area. The color choice is also the designer's choice. It can either be contrasting, the same or complementary. Just work with it until it "looks right". It's your design, only you can say what is "right".
