Hi - I'm really enjoying using PC Stitch, but have had recurring problems today with the 'program not responding' window; then everything seizes up and I have to shut down the computer and start all over again.

I had been using the copy and paste function in 400% zoom each time it has 'not responded'. I was working in colour blocks with only a few short backstitches.

Am I doing anything wrong? Can the 400% zoom not support the copy and paste? should I use a lower zoom? (Hard on old eyes)

Be grateful for any help. Thanks

Hi Diane

Thanks for the idea of increasing the no. of stitches per inch instead of increasing the zoom level -I haven't had any problems since doing that! Brilliant idea!!

Daisy,

The screen size might not help that much. I had a 15" monitor with my old ME machine and I normally used 200%. When I got Vista, my monitor was 17" and I still used 200%. I now have a 22" widescreen and I use 200% I guess I get bigger monitors just in line with my aging eyes!

One thing you might try. The base size of the stitch is based on the count you specified. Note that the size of the design and the estimate of the floss usage are the only things affected by the count specified. Maybe you can do with a lower zoom factor if you increase the count of the design. Maybe say it is 6 count (quite big) and try a 150% or 200% zoom. That might give you the effect you need without overloading your aging machine.

Hi Diane

Many thanks for all your comments and suggestions; should I need ever to send a file to Mark, how would I do it? (I'm not very tekkie!).

I have been experimenting again - all other apps were closed, but it's a 4-year-old laptop running XP that I'm using, so I think you are probably right and it's the computer that can't handle the zoom. (So I'm saving up for a better computer with a LARGER screen.)

Thanks again for your help.

Daisy,

It would be better to email Mark the actual PAT file rather than a PDF. A PDF only shows an image of the pattern and he would need to see the actual pattern to interpret the file "internals" properly. The only way to get a PDF of the pattern would be to "print" it using a virtual printer such as PrimoPDF.

I also have never heard of this problem.

There are several sample designs that are included with the PCStitch product. I suggest you load one of them and try the zoom and see what happens.

I also suggest you close all other manually activated applications (such as Word, Excel, Windows Explorer as well as any browser) while you test. Your task bar at the bottom should show no open applications. There's not much you can do about those that start at boot time and/or are always running (such as anti-virus, firewall and the operating system itself).

By doing this, you exclude any possible interference from other applications.

Also, you might want to include in your email, your operating system, memory, and processing speed. That might be a factor. If you have a large pattern and a small computer, it might cause a problem.

Hi Mark

As I'm new to PC Stitch, I haven't got many other patterns - I've been spending a lot of time on this one - a Band Sampler. I've tried it again this morning and it still locks up when I try to copy and paste a section of the pattern on 400% zoom. How do I attach a pdf of the pattern for you to see - quite a memory intensive one ?

The zoom size shouldn't have any effects on the copy and paste that I know of. If you try it with a different pattern, does it still lock up?
