When importing an image, most people use the "available list" option and just select the brand and type they want. You can change later if you wish.
For the palette, you need to select the colors you think you'll need and create a palette separately from the import facility. You select your colors, set the symbols you want and then save it as a palette. You can load that palette anytime you want later or even set it to be the default palette.
The palette option is much more limited as the software must chose the "best fit" for the colors ONLY from those rather than allowing a certain number from a larger selection (such as all DMC cotton).

Posted - 09/11/2010 : 20:02:07 Pre-selecting a palette - often as broad as a company's brand of floss is for the program to assign the actual colors available in that palette to the image you are importing.
The color picker is just you selecting a color and using it.
There is a basic tutorial on the use of the program but for ALL features, the best way is to just "play". Learn by doing.
