what's your experience in using photographs for new patterns/charts. I seem to use a lot of time to get it working or rather being manageable with the background cleaning.

The best cases of imports are with very simple backgrounds. They are very difficult to handle in an import. That being said, check out some of the other posts here. There are many with tips (the same ones several times - ) on converting a picture to a pattern.
