I see references to Pro Cross Stitch Pattern Maker and PC Stitch Pattern Viewer. Are these separate programs than PC Stitch Pro and/or PC Stitch Standard?

A .rar file is simply a compressed file. It can be anything. I use 7-zip to open .rar files (it also opens several others including .zip).

7-zip is free and will create a zip or it's own 7-zip format was well as opening other formats.

I don't think you should include .rar as a craft extension because it is no more a craft file extension than is .zip.

The patterns that you can down load intended for Pattern Maker also uses the extension .pat, but you can not open them within the PC Stitch Viewer or the PRO or Standard programs. You will need to download the Pattern Maker Viewer to open them.

I have been getting many patterns that show they are for PS Stitch but they still won't open. I have found sometimes they do open the Pattern Maker Viewer and vice-a-versa. There are a lot of freebie Patter Viewers that you can download. Once I figure out what viewer I can use I file that pattern into a new folder that I created on the hard drive. I created the initial folder and named it Patterns. Within that folder I created another folder for each type of viewer i.e.,
.pat = Patternsonline.com
.pat & .xsd = Pattern Maker
.wxy = Easy Cross
.ptk = Puntek
.rar = winRAR (You need this converter to open into another program. These are usually from out of Europe or the UK)
To down load the winRAR go to http://www.rarlab.com/

Lucy,

There is a PatternViewer program by M&R tech that uses a different format (.pvf instead of .pat). It can be used for patters of other kinds such as knitting and crocheting. It is different than PCStitch (either Standard or Pro). I have only seen it as a viewer and I do not know how the formatted files are created. Mark should be able to answer that.

I do not know what Pro Cross Stitch Pattern Maker is. There is a program PatternMaker that is similar to PCStitch but by another vendor. There is another product called Cross Stitch Pro, again by someone else but I do not know the product you mentioned.
