Hello! My name is April and I have been cross-stitching for a few years. There are some beautiful fairy patterns I have seen and I want to make them on my own computer instead of buying them from others. I have spent a considerable amount of money buying fairy cross stitch charts and if I can make them myself....it would save a ton of money. With four children...every penny counts! These are for my personal use, not to sell. Which program would you all recommend? I have read the problems with the PCPro and the version 7 seems like a good one. I just have never used this type of software before. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! But if I buy something I want it to be able to do everything....even though I usually just use full stitches and half stitches. I know a lot of people love the backstitch feature on one of these programs but I am unfamiliar with that. Any tips on what that does...just for outlining pictures...or more would help me out. Thanks again!! April

I see that plenty of people have looked at this post...but is anyone willing to respond? I would really appreciate any feedback on the programs you all own so that I can choose one. Thanks again, April

April,

It literally is "Import" under the "File" menu. You specify an image file on your computer (or in your digital camera or scanner) and work with parameters (you can start over whenever you want if it doesn't go right). The final result is a first-cut at a cross-stitch pattern. You can use the Help feature of Pro for some help but I found it rather obvious as to what to do.

Good Luck,

Diane

Thank you so much for your advice. Of course, I was just asking of the PCStitch programs available. I have read some about the Version 7 and 6 and the Pro and Standard. I want the fairy images for my home decor alone. So...as far as trying the free download versions....I have downloaded the Pro version. How do I go about trying to import an image to see what you are talking about? With the little fixes I will have to do. I know you can't save anything...but I was unaware you could import?...is that what I would be doing?....images from the computer. Thanks again...I appreciate the reply, April

Given that this board is specifically for the support of PCStitch in its various versions, it is obvious that most of us will "vote" for PCStitch.

The question as to which version is a tough one. Both Pro and Standard work basically the same way. Pro has more tools available and more features but the underlying process is the same.

I have both Pro and Standard full versions (as well as Lite from the pattern pieces) but I do not do much "importing".

I have never had any of the resource problems that have been reported here with Pro. I do have resource problems but they are because I am running on an older machine with limited memory. I keep running out!

I do want to make a few comments on the idea of making your own patterns. First it is not a completely straight forward process. There is a great deal of "art" in the process. I have seen MANY designs that were "plugged" into the software and no attempt was made to "smooth" out the confetti stitches, extraneous colors and "rough" spots. They look terrible in my opinion.

If you do import pictures to make your own patterns, you must be willing to spend the time to "tweak" to get the design the way you want it.

Also, if the image you are using as your base for your design is a copyrighted image or of a copyrighted item or character, you must NOT EVER give the pattern to anybody else. To do so will violate copyright.

Beyond that, the only way to know what pattern is right for you is to get the free viewer or trial versions of a variety of products and test them out. You must be willing to "lose" your work because the trials do not have save capabilities.
