Posted - 02/20/2017 : 20:03:43 There are too many colors and too many palettes for that to be feasible. Also, what symbol you like for a given color may not be what I like. It could be that one, or both of us, would have to change the symbol anyway.
You can have your own "default" palette that includes the colors and symbols you want and use that. I don't know for sure if it would keep the matching but that might work. The question is if you can give that palette to the import process.

Posted - 02/20/2017 : 17:58:04 Thank you for your reply. However, I am also a programmer and know that each time the program picks up a color, it assigns it a name, based on the type of floss being used. Black, for instance, will always be DMC 310. IF it had a black square symbol attached to the color, it would always show up on the pattern with that symbol.
I know it is difficult and may be way too much trouble to reprogram to include a symbol, but it is something that would be very helpful in the future. |

Posted - 02/20/2017 : 07:40:37 The software does not know what the colors are. The newest version, PCStitch 11, does some attempt to assign symbols relative to the shade of the color in use. However, it is still a case of first come, first served for the most part and the symbols are assigned based on the order they are created.
Even for patterns that are created without the import have the same issue. If you let the system set the colors, it will be based on the list of symbols, not the color.
Note -- you do have the ability to change symbols whenever you want so if you want certain colors to be certain symbols (like big black block to be black), then you can do it -- manually!
PCStitch is a program. It has code to do what you TELL it to do. It doesn't read your mind or emotions to give you what you want. I was a programmer professionally WAY back in the '80s (from before smartphone, cell phones and even PCs) and even then I said that the day the computer does what I WANT it to do, despite what I TELL it to do -- that's the day I'm running far, far away from the computer!

Posted - 02/20/2017 : 04:00:31 After getting about 1 1/2" of a 15" by 17" pattern completed (along with purchasing, sorting, labeling, & cutting lengths of 130 colors of floss), I realized that the pattern created is much darker than the picture I scanned. So I started over - huge pain. The bigger problem is that the new pattern has totally different symbols for the same DMC floss than the old. Wouldn't it be so much simpler if you had standard symbols for floss? This is really a mess right now and has got to be an issue for people who are constantly creating their own patterns. |

Posted - 12/19/2016 : 12:27:27 I don't know what version of PCStitch you are using.
For 10 and below, look for a series of symbols that look like: a block, a white star with a light colored background, a white star with a darker background, a white "x" and a dark "x". If you hover the mouse over each one, you will see a description that it is "viewed as" the appropriate item. I usually use the 3rd one which says "Blocks Symbols". It shows the colored blocks with either black or white symbol over the color (depending on which gives more contrast) so you can see both color and symbol.
For 11 with the ribbon (11 in older form is like above), click on home or use the home ribbon. With the 2nd group of "Stitch Types", there is an option to the right of that block that gives a drop-down menu to view the stitches as desired.
For printing, I think it is the same for all versions. Click to print. In the lower left part of the window, it says "Print symbols as" with a drop-down menu.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck,

Posted - 12/19/2016 : 09:03:55 To see the symbols in the pattern, just choose the appropriate display option for that. The placement of the option is with the stitch choice area and it does vary a little depending on the version and your personal settings.
For printing with symbols, it's a similar situation. Just select the option of how to print the stitches from the print dialog.
Good Luck,
