If you are familiar with Adobe Illustrator (and other similar apps), you know there is such a thing as Layers. We can open/import a drawing or picture onto one layer, and then add an empty layer "on top of" the first one. Then we trace over the first layer, creating a new drawing on the "top layer".
All that to ask this: For getting pdf copies, or scanned patterns, into PC Stitch (v10 and Win7 here), is there some way to do the above process? That is, bring the non-editable pattern into PC Stitch, and then fill in stitches over it, creating a new PC Stitch pattern?

Most of the posts here are questions. If you have something positive to contribute, by all means -- DO IT!
I'm sure it will help someone, even if it's just to give them an idea of something new to try themselves.
Based on my own posts, even if it is already posted, it's worth posting. I've posted my tips on importing images so many times I've lost count!

Well, well!
You are correct. I used an object from an Object Library and placed into my pattern, so I could "trace over it".
This works extremely well because the Object is same stitch count and stitch (grid) size as my project.
It remains to be seen how this will work when I bring in a scanned-in pattern and try to make it perfectly overlay my stitch grid.
I've developed a pretty cool procedure for "tracing" over and then toggling the Object on and off to see how my placed stitches are working out; and to check my status as I trace all over.
Should I enter that procedure in a Reply here? Is this something others might be interested in knowing? Is it already out there and I just THINK I've made a discovery? :-)

In a sense, layers are available -- they're called objects.
You can create an object at any time. If you bring in an existing pattern, define the whole thing as an object and then put stitches over it, it might give the same effect. I haven't tried it but it might work.
