When I take my graph to have it printed on one sheet, it's too small. If printed on 3 sheets, the squares/blocks (stitches) are still too small. How do I save a graph to my computer splitting it up into several pages so that when I take it to have it printed out, the stitches will be larger? I don't have a printer at home.

Thank you Dragonlair

The printing is just that - printing. You can export parts into jpg files or print to a PDF (with the proper software) but the graph is not the same thing. The pattern is coded differently and just represented as a graph when printed or displayed.

Okay, I get it. My graph can divide into 6 pages for printing.
Now, can I save it like this?

No - this overlap is something that is done when you do the print of the pattern. It is not something that others can do easily with the format.

When the print shop copied my graph to a PDF format, I saw it on her screen but I have no idea what I'm reading there. And when she went to copy it, it printed out on one page so she had to split it up. Maybe the print shop can do what you are saying and print it on several pages but I don't know.

OK, first question: what is the stitch size of the pattern -- not the count, the number of stitches width and height?

You can set it so that there is a bit of "overlap" (default is 2 stitches, I think) as the pattern goes right and down.

For patterns such as this, it is not intended to be taped into a single large pattern. The overlap is for you to do one page at a time and use the overlap to connect to the next page. You do often have 2 pages in "action" at one time when working on the edges of each page.

I have some patterns that are like 12 or 16 pages long and they are not designed to be stitched together.

That's where the print to PDF is good -- you can see how the pattern will appear when printed -- before it's actually printed.

I believe this is exactly what the print shop did, converted it to PDF then split it up into 3 pages. The problem is that the squares are still really small. I had to tape the pages tog to make my graph picture. If I have the print shop divide it into say 6 pages, or 8, to enlarge the squares, the picture will be HUGE and difficult to work with. It's already very large with 3 sheets taped tog. What does everybody else do?

If you don't have a printer available, I highly recommend a virtual printer so you can "print" to a PDF. You may have to google to find just what you want but I can give a few hints.

I used to use PrimoPDF. I no longer use that. When I tried to install it on my new laptop a few months ago, I ran into a hornet's nest of problems! It has so many programs that it tries to install, despite you saying NO and then installs more as you're trying to uninstall the junk it did put in. I must have uninstalled several of those products at least 4 or 5 times! Stay away from PrimoPDF is my recommendation.

However, Foxit (an Adobe Reader Clone) has a PDF creator that is part of the product and works the same way. Since I don't like Adobe (known to be a resource hog but better than it used to be), I have used Foxit for years. Just install that and you have a way to view PDFs AND create them from other products. I set it to be the default PDF viewer.

Once installed, when you click to "print", it should be among the printers in the drop-down menu. If you don't have a printer with your computer, it should be no problem to define the Foxit PDF Creator as the default printer.

That way you can see easily if your PCStitch patterns have "printed" the way you want and then put that PDF on a flash drive to take to the library to print.

Then again, you can also get a fairly nice printer for under $40! The ink ends up costing more than the printers. Unless you do a lot of printing, I don't recommend brother because of print head issues with infrequent usage. HP is excellent in this case and I think Canon is also good. Their print heads are in the cartridges themselves and prevent the massive blocked print head problems with brother.

I've used HP for many years and they are very tolerant of infrequent usage. However, be aware that some new printers are so new that you may have to call HP support to get the print driver to work right. It took me 4.5 hours recently and 2 calls to get it to work and that ended up requiring 2 print drivers (one for support of the printer and one to print). I don't like the multi-color single cartridge but that's better than blocked print heads!

Good Luck,

Diane

Hi Dragonlair. Changing in the print menu won't help because the print shop and/or local library doesn't have PCStitch program in their computers and that's where I take mine to be printed.
Now, what is a 'virtual printer' and how do I find that and use it? How can I change my graph so when it prints, it prints on many pages therefor enlarging it? What I do is save my graph to my computer and then to my flash drive

Check the print options. You can specify how many blocks (stitches) per inch printed are shown.

Use Print Preview. That should give an indication of the actual printed size. Also, you can install a virtual printer so you can "print" to PDF. That will allow you to see what will be printed as well.

Good Luck,

Diane
