I'm convinced I've seen somewhere within the designing programme where I can change the thickness of the backstitch thats showing on the pattern, but now, no matter how hard I've tried, I've lost it! Can someone please point me in the right direction ? Thanks

Check under Tools > Options

Under Default Pattern Settings, select Stitch Drawing Options. The backstitch line width is set at 20. Just increase that to make for thicker visible lines. This does not affect how the backstitch is actually defined for stitching (number of strands). You change the number of strands used in Pattern Properties.
