Is there a way to get it to use 3/4 stitches as well as full stitches when importing a picture? For simpler pics I can go back and add them myself, but it's too hard for complex pics.

The simple answer is: no.

A conversion from an import results in ONLY full cross stitches. Any specialty stitches, including fractionals and backstitches must be done manually later as part of the "tweaking" process.
