Hi,
I have an image - 8" long at 10 stitches/inch.
I want to reduce it to 3.5" long at 24 stitches/inch.
when I do that, the pattern loses all detail.
When I enter 24 stitches, the program automatically reduces the image
to 5" and then it retains the details.
How can I reduce the size of the pattern and retain the details? |

Same concept but slightly different results. 3.5 inches at 18 count is only 63 stitches.
You're about an inch shy. The ONLY way to get 3.5 inches is with 63 stitches.
Therefore, if you are making the pattern, you must make your original 63 pixels wide. That may result in some loss of detail. There is simply no way way around it. You're working with fewer stitches!

Sorry-I meant 18 stitches/inch -not 24.
What's the remedy for that? |

8 inches at 10 stitches/inch is 80 stitches.
3.5 inches at 24 stitches/inch is 84 stitches.
Therefore, if you have a pattern already that is showing 10 count and it is 80 stitches wide, then the same pattern, if stitched at 24 count will be less than 3.5 inches wide.
The pattern it self doesn't care what the count is. It just knows the count so it can display it on the screen in approximate the right size and so it can calculate the approximate amount of floss. If you choose to do the pattern in a smaller count, you simply will use less materials!
If you do not have the pattern yet, then again, don't worry about the "count", just the number of stitches and make the picture from which you make the pattern the same number of pixels as the number of stitches you want. You want 1 pixel/stitch and that is regardless of what size stitch you have!

First of all -- if you have it imported and you like it - you DON'T have to do anything. Just use different size fabric! If your fabric is 24 count instead of 10 count, then it will be smaller. The only changes you'll see if you use other fabric than what is shown in the pattern is the size of the result and the amount of floss used! The pattern doesn't CARE what you do. A stitch is a stitch is a stitch -- it must may be smaller or larger.
The NUMBER of stitches remains the same!
