Hello,
Is it possible to alter the pattern properties once they've been saved? I was too excited about starting to make a pattern to wait until I actually had some cloth, so I randomly selected 14-count. Now I'd like to use a 28-count linen. I just went into pattern properties and tried changing the numbers there, but that ends up "shrinking" the pattern within a larger space. Can I change the count but maintain the "ratio" of the pattern against the cloth?

No, a change in the stitch size is a change in a single stitch. To retain the actual design size when using a smaller stitch (in this case by 1/4) would make an unusable pattern. It would be incredibly "blocky".
No, if you want a certain SIZE pattern then you need to design it with that size in mind.
In the case of an import of an image, that can be handled by knowing the stitch count required for the size you want and adjust the image size accordingly before hand.
After a pattern is in development, it's a manual process - there's no 2 ways around it.

That is the thing I was hoping could be done - have the pattern resized so it would not be 1/4 the size of my draft pattern. Maybe I should have said "scaled" instead of resized i.e. the software would know that one square should become, say, four, to SCALE it so it will still be 8x10 in this case, but on 28-count. But I imagine that would be very tricky to program so perhaps I was dreaming in Technicolour! |

Remember that if you stitch over one on 28 count rather than use 14 count Aida, your actual project will be 1/4 the size (half the width and half the height). However, the EXACT same pattern can be used in either case. The pattern does not care. It is just blocks that show stitches. YOU decide if the block is count 28 or count 14.
The difference will be what you see on the display because that is reflected by the count size as well as the estimates for size and floss/fabric usage will be different.
The PATTERN itself does not care what the count it.

Thanks for your response. I think what I understand is that although you can change the size of the graph, and how you view it, the software will not resize the image (in this case an object from the library) that has been placed or created on the 14-count graph, so that when I stitch on 28 count my image isn't teensy-tiny. A 21×23 object will always be a 21×23 object and cannot be doubled in size, for example. Is that right? |

When you set the count, that sets the size of the grid you see. You can change what you see by zooming.
However, except for the estimate for the final size and the estimates for the amount of floss required, it makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE to the pattern itself.
You can take a 14 count pattern and use whatever count fabric you want. The pattern does NOT change at all.
I normally use 14 count with 200% zoom just because I like the size of the grid that it creates. It does not mean I plan on stitching in that count. The floss estimates are rough anyway so I don't pay a lot of attention to them unless I have many stitches of a single color and then I just make sure I have PLENTY.
