I printed out a pattern and there are some spaces without symbols. Does anyone know what this means? Are they meant to be stiched with plain white? These are areas in my picture where they do look white.
Thanks,

I'd say that one can't say that without seeing the image and the chart, nevertheless you should check your *.pat file and see is there any floss in your palette which has no symbol in it. If there is that is the colour you ought to use.

If there isn't check from your chart what there should be and as apparently it doesn't print well (if there should be, that is) change it.

If you move your mouse over the area with no stitches, do you still get a color name listed in the status bar? It may be that there are just no stitches in those locations.

Just because you see color (or even white) does not mean you have any stitches there. If you use an option other than color block you should either see a virtual stitch or a symbol. If there is no symbol, it could still be a color with no symbol defined. However, if there is no virtual stitch, there is no stitch in that place.
